Terence Nance (U.S., 1982) is a filmmaker, writer, director, actor and musician. His work ties in with a broader tendency among young African-American artists to express the absurdity of living in a racist society by embracing the surreal, disturbing and bizarre in their work. Nance makes both large-scale Hollywood productions (Space Jam 2) and independent artistic work.
Swimming in Your Skin Again is a short dreamy non-narrative film about heritage, ancestors, human relations to nature, and spiritual life viewed from a black African-American perspective. The associative set-up undermines a direct linear interpretation or theme, but creates a world in which fundamental motifs such as family, community, spirituality and a sense of belonging are unambiguously connected.
Guillaume: ‘What an incredible talent! Nance also made the HBO series Random acts of Flyness, which really made me fall in love with his work. It’s dripping attitude and true craftsmanship. Many makers in this exhibition are multi-talents and have a link with pop culture: Terence Nance, Piet Parra, Dana Lixenberg. They move gracefully between commercial and autonomous work without losing their unique style. That takes real skill.’
