Art is our first language. Throughout the year, Het HEM presents a range of temporary art programmes as well as more permanent art installations.

“We must bring about the end of the world as we know it.”
There is always music to listen to at Het HEM, with programmes focused on experimental ways to create, present and experience music in the building through listening sessions, live shows, and musical artis-in-residence initiatives.
Come by for a drink and a bite, wine and dine at our restaurant, or settle down on our sunny terrace on the Costa del Zaano.
Het HEM loves books. During your visit, come lose yourself in the library's rich selection or discover new favourites in the SANZ Shop.
Situated in a former munitions factory, Het HEM is a new home for contemporary culture.
The building's industrial design and our experimental art programme bring ambience and meaning to every event.
“Each swells of its own conviction even when that conviction is doubt”
– Key Miller
A person is not one thing. We consist of multiple organs that work together and jointly make us human. We are active subjects. We are all people with diverse backgrounds and multiple interests. We are complex beings that interact with others who influence and hopefully improve our thinking, speaking, and being. We are in constant contact with each other, with the objects we use, and with the world around us. Exhibitions function in the same manner. They facilitate exchange, activate interaction with thoughts, with ideas, with positions, with people. They open doors, point to windows, indicate existing routes, create new paths. As do artists and works of art. These are all active agents which, beyond simply being what they are, also do and manage to bring about many things.
When we’re dealing with Abundance, it’s all about a multiplicity of subjects and meanings – existing simultaneously. This exhibition brings together works of art and enables them to be in a conversation with each other. The visitor eavesdrops on these conversations – perhaps one, perhaps several, perhaps all at once. Abundance offers possibilities, beyond unambiguous singular meanings, it manifests multiple meanings – potentially all at once. It’s as overpowering as it is enriching. It’s about being different in a gathering of like-minded people. It’s about similarities between strangers. It’s about hearing and seeing, listening and feeling: about sensory intuition and rational knowing. Knowing, recognizing, and confessing; moving and being moved. Touching and being touched. Nothing is mutually exclusive, neither is the one better than the other.
It’s about ethnicity and sexuality.
Solidarity and physicality.
Complexity and transience.
Prejudice and ignorance.
Consuming and letting go.
It’s about today’s world with its foundations in yesterday’s history and dreaming about a better tomorrow.
It is love and aversion.
Collectivity and commerce.
Challenges and obstacles, to overcome.
It is an abundance of individual positions where you can swim freely read between the lines and be heard and described in/on your own terms.
You’re never too old to learn, or too young to be allowed to participate.
There’s no such thing as different or wrong.
The present is a gift, you can just be in all your multiplicities:
