Vincent van Velsen:
When I saw her graduation exhibition at the Columbia MFA in 2018, I was immediately sold. I found the shiny pink ribbons and well-produced videos – exceptional, both captivating in terms of rhythm and visuals. A couple of years ago I shared the work with Simon(e), who also loved it. Nye links age-related discrimination against women (ageism) to the stigma surrounding elderly bodies. Nye’s videos portray women’s bodies, elderly bodies, elderly women’s bodies. She depicts them in relationship to other bodies. Rhythmically swaying bodies that we often are not used to seeing in bathing suits. In a space that is a cross between a brothel and a nightclub. This is what video cabins in the back of sex shops would look like if they were more queer and less taboo. Nye often cites the TV show Golden Girls as her ideal. Somehow, the videos also are very reminiscent of Florida: the place where, in American comedy series, the elderly spend their final decades surrounded by warmth and care. This space is nurturing too, due to the inclusion of all age and sizes.
