Simon(e) van Saarloos, with their provoking practice in literature, philosophy and theater, is the perfect guest to investigate the meaning of accessibility in Het HEM. In their practice, Van Saarloos, draws attention to what society deems unimportant. With their methodological approach of looking beyond the dominant stories and social structures, they map out a world which makes space for silenced and concealed voices and facts.

Van Saarloos wrote essays, opinion pieces and fiction, for amongst others de Volkskrant, NRC Handelsblad, Vrij Nederland and De Correspondent and has published several books. Most recently "Herdenken herdacht (2019)" a non-fiction work on a forgotten LGBTQI+ past, a ‘white memory’ and embodied remembrance. Their book "Het monogame drama (2015)" has recently been translated to English and presented in the United States. Van Saarloos writes theater and poetry and frequently lectures and performs. They studied philosophy and literature and obtained a master's degree from the Dutch Art Institute. In 2021, Van Saarloos will start a PhD in Rhetoric at UC Berkeley.
