‘These livelihoods make worlds too – and they show us how to look around rather than ahead.’

Chapter 2WO Public Programme
Shock Forest Group (2019) is an international research team consisting of architects, cartographers, linguists, coders, urban planners, sound makers, biologists, designers and engineers. It is an experiment in open research, where the research categories surface as the research develops. It is also an experiment in alternative education, a classroom without a teacher, where learning emerges as a product of polyphony.

What is it like to be a bird in the shock forest? What attracted the herons in the 60s and what did they see what made them leave?
Birdwatcher Thijs de Zeeuw takes you on an exploration to look for birds on the Hembrug site and makes you look at them differently by thinking through their eyes. As a landscape architect, Thijs de Zeeuw designs animal enclosures for Artis Zoo in Amsterdam, where he tries to bring together his love for nature and the animal's perspective. He also conducts research into the biodiversity of the city and is the founder of the multidisciplinary platforms the Nature Optimist and Zoo of The Future.
