Art is our first language. Even while we are closed for renovations, our programming continues. You will find our art programmes at off-site locations throughout the year and on the digital platform The Couch. The permanent installations in Het HEM will remain open to the public after the renovation.
Our music programme focuses on experimental ways of making, presenting and experiencing sound in the building through listening sessions, live performances and musical artist-in-residence programmes. During renovations, we organise music programmes at off-site locations and on the digital platform The Couch.
Het HEM loves books. During your visit, come lose yourself in the library's rich selection.
The building's industrial design and our experimental art programme bring ambience and meaning to every event.
Situated in a former munitions factory, Het HEM is a new home for contemporary culture.
With great joy we welcome you to 'Once you enter my house, it becomes our house', a group exhibition presenting the work of artists who currently have their studio at Het HEM: Lisette Van Hoogenhuyze, Simon Keizer, Marilyn Sonneveld, Anan Striker and Tom van Veen
Once upon a time there was a group of houses, all houses overlook a village square. A village square with concrete beams on it. Two blue cars in the parking lot and two blue bikes in the bike racks.
If you pay close attention you’ll hear the friendly brushstrokes of Marilyn, sense the slight movement of Lisette’s fabrics, seize the gentle touch of Simon’s fingers on his organ, smell the sweet scent of drying paint on Tom’s canvas and feel the grindy sound of Anan’s cassettes. Once you enter my house, it becomes our house.
On the village square works derived from the personal and intimate are out in the open and exposed to grow into something different. Through chatter and time and maybe some more chatter and some more time, here, on the square, the artists scratch each other’s backs and push each other forward. During shared times of confinement, their thoughts, emotions, and personal trajectories all meet in this communal space.
In ‘Once you enter my house, it becomes our house’ the artists will reach out of their studios and make their space and ideas, our space, and our ideas.
