Art is our first language. Even while we are closed for renovations, our programming continues. You will find our art programmes at off-site locations throughout the year and on the digital platform The Couch. The permanent installations in Het HEM will remain open to the public after the renovation.
Our music programme focuses on experimental ways of making, presenting and experiencing sound in the building through listening sessions, live performances and musical artist-in-residence programmes. During renovations, we organise music programmes at off-site locations and on the digital platform The Couch.
Het HEM loves books. During your visit, come lose yourself in the library's rich selection.
The building's industrial design and our experimental art programme bring ambience and meaning to every event.
Situated in a former munitions factory, Het HEM is a new home for contemporary culture.
After an inspiring Biennial in 2022, Sonic Acts returns to Het HEM for ‘Sediments’, a whole day of interactive events in our home in Zaandam. On the 23rd of March, you can join field and audio walks, participatory performances, and workshops.
Listen to the story of the wind with Minji Kim, following sound and sensation along the riverbank. Attune to the weather and cycle into the unknown with Yeon Sung as part of her participatory performance – be sure to bring your own bike! Mint Park explores the area surrounding Het HEM, guided by Pauline Oliveros’ deep listening approach and DSP (digital signal processing) algorithms to collectively create a composition. Also leading an excursion, Elena Khurtova and Anika Schwarzlose will take visitors into the Hembrugterrein, revealing remnants of the former weapons factory.
Open events will also take place at Het HEM, accessible for free – dive into the Sonic Act's archive with director Lucas van der Velden, curator Maud Seuntjens, The Social Lover, and editor Hannah Pezzack. Their conversation will focus on the 30 year legacy of the organisation, followed by a DJ set from The Social Lover, who will play out archival recordings. Delve into Farzané's installation Embedded/Embodied – the artist will demonstrate how the piece's improvising agent functions and interacts with the environment of Het HEM. If you can't make it to the venue, visit ]The Couch](https://thecouch.hethem.nl/) online to encounter another dimension of Farzané's A.I.-driven, interactive work. Finally, Mint Park will perform Sensing Boundary Layers of Unknown – set in an octophonic multi-channel system, the sound performance features an acoustic radar developed as part of research into creating a DIY air pattern measuring device.
