Art is our first language. Even while we are closed for renovations, our programming continues. You will find our art programmes at off-site locations throughout the year and on the digital platform The Couch. The permanent installations in Het HEM will remain open to the public after the renovation.
Our music programme focuses on experimental ways of making, presenting and experiencing sound in the building through listening sessions, live performances and musical artist-in-residence programmes. During renovations, we organise music programmes at off-site locations and on the digital platform The Couch.
Het HEM loves books. During your visit, come lose yourself in the library's rich selection.
The building's industrial design and our experimental art programme bring ambience and meaning to every event.
Situated in a former munitions factory, Het HEM is a new home for contemporary culture.
The sun sets, the shadows of the pillars in the factory dance and sway, creating a game of which only they know the rules. This time, you don't join in by dancing, but by spending the night in the huge exhibition hall on the first floor of Het HEM during the event Sleep In: Slow Wave Phase. This event is inspired by Robert Rich's concept of "Sleep Concerts", which formed the basis for the Sleep In series in Leipzig and was held in 2021 and 2022 as Slow Wave Phase in Het HEM. After and edition in Muziekgebouw in 2023, the event returns to it's original home.
Sleep In: Slow Wave Phase is an overnight stay in the huge exhibition hall on the first floor of Het HEM. During this special experiment, the participants will spend the evening and the night in the open hall accompanied by various musical acts. Besides the rows of pillars, rows of beds have been set up as an (almost absurd) setting for this experiment. The idea of sleeping together and the musical and auditory accompaniment give a new dimension to our ideas of what sleep is. It is very rare to share the intimacy of our sleep with so many people at once. When we spend time with others, our brains are much more active and our senses remain more alert - even in unconscious states such as when we sleep and when we dream.

Alan Abrahams AKA Portable AKA Bodycode has been in motion his whole life—growing up in South Africa, coming of age in London, decamping to Lisbon and finally settling in Berlin—and his deeply syncopated brand of electronic dance music has evolved with every step of the journey.
His formative years were spent in an impoverished Cape Town township ironically tagged “Beverly Hills”, and to the backbeat of the first wave of Chicago house records he emerged out of the ruins of a post-apartheid South Africa.
Portable has now embarked on a transformative journey with "African Ambient." Moving across South Africa and Europe, Portable has absorbed the rich cultural influences of both continents, creating a unique artistic identity that transcends geographic boundaries.
