With his works of art – often a mix between installation and performance – Dries Verhoeven is a welcome guest at international theatre festivals. His creations are visually overwhelming but also disruptive to look at. Verhoeven explores the boundaries between visual art and theatre and also likes to sharpen the relationship between spectator and performer.

Verhoeven’s Broeders verheft u ter vrijheid depicts our future as working people. We live in a time where robots and forms of AI are taking over more and more work. The exhibition space seems to have turned into a grand apocalyptic distribution center, with people as stowaways. Verhoeven works for this production with performers from Bulgaria who have experience as labour migrants. Are they calling for resistance? Will there be a resurgence of the labour movement, or should we accept the inevitable automation? The result is as disruptive as it is impressive. A requiem for the worker.

Part 2 of 'Broeders' consists of an exhibition in West Den Haag. This former U.S. Embassy building is also the residence of the performers during the tour. Until 15 August the exhibition can still be visited, and includes a.o. the documentary 'The recruitment' and the video work 'To perform'.
