Silent film screening of a reconstructed version of the film Colour film of the Netherlands Steamship Company – also known as The colours and glory of our tropics from 1938 by Dutch filmmaker, photographer and journalist, Alphons Hustinx. It is one of the oldest color films by the Dutch government (Rijksvoorlichtingsdienst).
The film was commissioned by The Netherlands Steamship Company and documents a trip from The Netherlands to the former Dutch East Indies shortly before the beginning of the Second World War. Due to its political and historical context, different debatable aspects of western superiority, power as well as legitimation, appropriation and exoticism are captured in the footage. The Dutch-Indonesian music collector and dj Derozan will reflect the film material and the conveyed contents through a vinyl dj-set.
Invited by Phuong-Dan with the support and film provided by RE:VIVE an initiative from The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision
