Art is our first language. Even while we are closed for renovations, our programming continues. You will find our art programmes at off-site locations throughout the year and on the digital platform The Couch. The permanent installations in Het HEM will remain open to the public after the renovation.
Our music programme focuses on experimental ways of making, presenting and experiencing sound in the building through listening sessions, live performances and musical artist-in-residence programmes. During renovations, we organise music programmes at off-site locations and on the digital platform The Couch.
Het HEM loves books. During your visit, come lose yourself in the library's rich selection.
The building's industrial design and our experimental art programme bring ambience and meaning to every event.
Situated in a former munitions factory, Het HEM is a new home for contemporary culture.
Swap Talk is a social story project in which we build a collection of ‘human books’ – people with a wish to share their personal story with visitors in a one-to-one conversation.
At a time when algorithms determine much of our view on the world, we think it’s important to remain curious and open towards each other.
We facilitate meetings between people who want to exchange ideas about various social topics with someone outside their own circle. Contributors to the living book collection participate as a volunteer. Het HEM offers the opportunity for them to share their story, in turn inspiring others to further reflect and develop. Visitors do not have to pay for Conversation Swap.
You can find more information about the Swap Talk on June 30 on Facebook.
Every season, Het HEM organises a Swap Talk on-loan day, during which visitors can borrow the living books. The participating books experiment with narrative forms that tie in with the theme and the artworks of the Chapters. The first Swap Talk takes place on June 30 and deals with the issues around young people, Hip Hop, learning-by-doing, and discrimination. See our Facebook event for more information (Dutch language only).
