Chapter 5IVE: Samir Bantal & Rem Koolhaas
Programme 2022
Chapter 4OUR: Abundance
LIGHT ROOM
Designed and managed by San Serriffe, including a poster exhibition by Plan B, a giant zine by When Site Lost The Plot and a video work by Kathe Burkhart (ROZENSTRAAT [ a rose is a rose is a rose])
In the Light Room, Plan B covers an entire wall with over 30 posters of the projects that took place at Mertens Frames Project Space by Plan B in the past 6 years. The posters are designed by Our Polite Society, a studio for graphic design, type design and typographic research based in Amsterdam and Stockholm. Plan B is an independent artist-run platform by Tarja Szaraniec and Tomas Adolfs since 2016.
Next to the merchandise, ROZENSTRAAT presents the short video I Touch the Air (2019-2020) by the American artist and writer Kathe Burkhart. The video is a siren song about mermaids and separations by sea. In 2023, Burkhart will have an exhibition at ROZENSTRAAT.
On the floor, you can flick through the giant zine provided by artist-run space ‘When Site Lost The Plot’. The zine is a brief, oversized archive of "third-hand documentation": ephemera and archival materials from 4 projects hosted by the space in 2021 dedicated to geopolitical concerns in Eastern Europe.
Next to her work as a visual artist and filmmaker, Lisa Spilliaert has a big passion for nails. She has a vast stream of happy customers who like to show off Spilliaert’s colourful, elegant and funky nail design. In her solo show Growth Record at de Brakke Grond, the Japanse-Flemish Spilliaert premieres her newest video work in an ongoing series in which she focusses on a Japanse boy, who could, so to speak, have been her son. At Het HEM she will focus on YOU and make your hands into beautiful works of art.
GREY SPACE
21:00 – 02:00: cocktail bar with a curated cocktail menu by over 11 project spaces
The Black Archives present the mixtape LAWINE, a reinterpretation of audio archive material from the colonial history of Suriname and The Netherlands by 5 artists from Zaanstad: visual artist Brian Elstak and rappers Ella John, RFx, Den Zen and dj/producer The Flexican. Through the interdisciplinary and intergenerational collaboration and archive material, the mixtape grew into becoming a true audio-visual artwork expressing a love for experimentation. The mixtape will be introduced by a short video made by Salma Chafouk Idrissi, which shows the strong connection and creative exchange between artists and art spaces from Zaanstad and Amsterdam. The next step in the LAWINE project is a collaboration between Brian Elstak and the Homebase collective of young local makers. If you already like to listen to LAWINE, you can do so here.
To give our happy Europe a boost in these times of advancing dictators, DJ Boonie Kleinjan will present an adaptation of his Trance Europe Express & co set. Boonie is a visual artist and techno nerd, but he also plays lots of other kinds of music. He is one of the founders of the Antistrot art collective, art director of Anus Records and a co-inventor of ‘Ultimate Jazz’. Boonie a.k.a. Johan Kleinjan is represented by Galerie Fleur & Wouter.
While you’re dancing in the Grey Space, the video In Our Real Life (2018-21) by Jason Hendrik Hansma (Marwan) will be projected on you.In Our Real Life is an archival project that scraped amateur video footage of waves striking architecture from across the world on various online platforms. Collated over 3 years the clips have been woven together into what could be best described as a 'character study' of sea-level rise in relation to the built environment. The work attempts to undo as much as it makes, unpacking internet-based culture to the reality of both collapsing and rising borders.
Next to the cocktail bar, you will find Confetti (2021), a video work by Jaehun Park (Bradwolff), a Korean artist living and working in Amsterdam. Confetti is a thousand pieces of plastic that explode on the winner's podium or party. The colourful and scattering plastic symbolises the myth of the winner takes it all, and the ritual for capitalism. The end of the big sports events such as Formula 1, is celebrated with hundreds of thousands of paper flowers bursting at the moment the winner lifts the trophy and creating a dramatic spectacle. But after 5 seconds, what is left of this? Who takes care of it, and where does it go?
Did you know that the very early conceptions for The Curators Room – a creative platform based in Amsterdam and Barcelona since 2021 - started as a result of a two-week artist-residency at Het HEM in 2020? At Het HEM, artist Lisette Ros, dancer Guido Dutilh and curator Gabriel Rolt developed and performed a new work which formed the basis of a long collaboration. On the occasion of the Het HEM & Friends party, Lisette Ros and The Curators Room have partnered again. Through a live stream, Ros will perform the ritual of getting ready for the party – a ritual she has been doing daily since high school. This is one of the important rituals in her daily life, a routinised banal action of “getting dressed”, naturally connected with her fluid identity. As a visitor dancing in the Grey Space, you will become a participant in this very intimate, fundamental moment that finds its place in both Ros’ home in Iceland as well as in Het HEM.
‘There are still flowers that will endlessly grow’ is a performance by Anto López Espinosa staging their body on top of an imaginary mountain. From there, they lipsync an ode to their existence. Through sound, voices and other sonic experiences Anto performs their personal blossoming: as a collective decision, and as a shared celebration. Additionally, a limited edition printed work will be available for sale at the event. A material emblem as a soft launch of Laurel Project Space’s upcoming research-based programme, made in collaboration between us - the new Laurel team - and our in-house graphic designer Cleo TSW
23:20 – 00:10: music by Kunstverein Part 1 (Yana Foqué en Reinier Klok)
Smári Rúnar Róbertsson will do his performance SERENADE, which he developed earlier as part of a series organised by Welcome Stranger. In the winter of 2020-21 four artists were invited to use the facade of their own house as a meaningful space to create new work. The window was the starting point for Smári Róbertsson's interventions he made at his house. In his work Róbertsson dealt with the hidden and unknown by exploring folklore, such as the folktale 'The Father of Eighteen Elves'. At the time he developed three performances, one of them is SERENADE which he will perform again at Het HEM. This time not from his own window, but from the window of Het HEM’s artist in residence apartment overlooking the Grey Space. For this special occasion Rietlanden Women's Office added HEAVY ornament to the performance.
23:20 – 00:10: music by Kunstverein Part 2 (Yana Foqué en Reinier Klok)
DARK ROOM
'Our understanding of the world, of nature is shaped by our perception of it,' says artist Kévin Bray (ISOamsterdam). His installation Breakdown After Before (2019) is a life-size diorama through which the visitor can walk. He creates an illusionary landscape by adopting some of the oldest special effect techniques cinema has to offer: parts of the scenery are painted on transparent glass and placed in front of the camera lens in such a way that they create the illusion of a romantic landscape, beautiful and dreamy as if upgraded by a filter bubble.
DEXTER ROOM
In ‘A Seat & A Dance’, a cacophony of memories bleed into each other across oceans and generations. Writer and designer Brechje Krah and writer and performer Alec Mateo bring close the stories of Cyrilio and the grandmother to find comfort in the chaos of narrative, its finality betrayed. It is a performance in reading and sound.
During Shots from the Archive the Dexter room will be transformed in a space where secret, hidden stories from De Appel’s rich Archive will come to life. Immerse yourself in spoken word performances by the archivists who got to dive into the Archive, and who will share their discoveries with you on this night. While listening to their stories you can enjoy one of De Appel’s special cocktails and subscribe to The Remote Archivist publication which is sent every few months.
TOILET (in between Grey Space and outside area)
The toilet smells like the internet! Being online stimulates many senses, except our sense of smell. In one of Het HEM’s toilets, The Hmm – an inclusive platform for internet cultures- creates a Hmmosphere: a translation of internet cultures and The Hmm’s guiding principles – creative, experimental, critical and weird- into a scent experience. The Hmmosphere scent is developed in collaboration with Cesar Majorana and their audience. You can buy the scent at the merchandise space in the Light Room and take it home with you.
OUTSIDE AREA
Smoking and making friends go together perfectly, and even better in the amazing smoking area of Sexyland World in Het HEM. During the night they will launch the exclusive and uber glamorous Sex is Life ashtray. This handmade art piece in a limited edition of only 20, will be revealed in a very special way by Sexyland’s own Dr Claw. You can buy one together with a year-long Sexyland membership for a very special Het HEM & Friends price.
