In collaboration with ArtEZ University of the Arts we’re organizing a 12-week research and teaching program:
Transformative Justice and Prison Abolition: an artistic, educative and activist exploration.
In this interactive learning program we investigate and delve into the themes and urgent issues discussed in Het HEM’s latest exhibition Chapter 4OUR: Abundance. The program includes individual research supervision and workshop sessions, individual feedback and group tutorial sessions, online interactions with international guest speakers. We will open networking opportunities at Het HEM in the weekends.
We are inviting motivated participants with a clear desire to dig deeper into the content of the theme and topic of Chapter 4OUR. Together with you, we want to produce statements, perspectives, considerations, sharp visions. We invite you to join us.
The program is developed for artists, design professionals and bachelor graduates with more than 5-years of experience in the field of art, design or artistic research.
Through interaction with core Professors, the curatorial team of Het HEM as well as guest speakers from the (international) professional field, you will immerse yourself in the world of critical inquiry, urgent questions and speculative future making.
Peer-to-peer learning by executing small group assignments is part of the module; during seminars you will have class together, and work on assignments in small groups - as researchers.
Upon a final assessment by a qualified of ArtEZ professors, the participants receive written feedback and a certification from ArtEZ University of the Arts. Participants holding a bachelor’s degree in the Arts or Design domain, can opt for a pre-Master certification.
Sessions, meetings and workshops will take place on Thursdays and Fridays from 10:00 to 16.30.
Thursday evenings: lectures.
Weekends: work on your assignments, at the premises of Het HEM.
In addition to this, you will need approximately 2 days a week to work on your individual and/or group assignments and prepare for your next class through literature and desk research. Since classes are on Thursday and Fridays, ample time remains for your own professional practice. We expect a 50% study load (20 hours active and self-studies per week).
Your individual research development is an important part of this program. As you get familiar with the world of critical inquiry through art and research, you are going to document your findings along the way. One excursion will be scheduled.
We challenge participants to work with theory, literature and the surroundings of Het HEM. The underlying idea is that (any) place or event is always bigger than its definition. Its existence is produced by many layers (actualized or in potential)inter-connected with its surrounding elements. The research assignment and program will therefore start with an intensive mapping of a variety of possible layers. In fact, the layers that surround (and basically form) the physical entities are also, sometimes very indirectly, defining the Chapter4 endeavors. This Mapping of Agency will unfold the many symbolic, structural, political, social, affective and epistemological orders that are always included, but not part of the products they produced.
Based on this intensive mapping, a new process starts to re-territorialize this agency into a new form of individual creation, enabling the participants to explore how they relate and reconfigure the existing work and expressions into a new individuation. By doing so, participants discover the depth and intensity of what Chapter 4OUR can extend to, the possibilities of thought, statements, agency and performative positions.
Documenting and reflecting on your work is an important aspect within this program. The work you make can be used for an admission interview at ArtEZ or another Master program elsewhere. After you have successfully finished the program through a formal assessment, you can receive a certificate with a description of the course and personal feedback on your work.
